You write beautifully. I was touched by Willie's story. You called your visit to the shelter, "a stroke of fate" but in The Lord's Prayer it says "Thy will be done." And that's what happen. God's will was done. Because of you, Willie was not put down and became your guardian, your partner and a hero to many children. Sorry for your loss.
